Growing Herbs on the Windowsill.
Fall and winter are amazing seasons where you can wind down a little and-- particularly in the cooler climates, have a little more indoors time with family and friends.
There are both good and bad aspects to that. One of the things that bothers many people is the bit of cabin fever and the lack of greenery inside the house. We've got a way to combat that for you.
Most of us have windowsills that are wide enough to accommodate the smaller terra cotta pots and get things growing inside over the winter. One of my favorite things to grow are fresh herbs growing on the windowsill. While we can buy just about anything that we need these days, nothing is fresher and tastier than freshly cut herbs from your own windowsill garden.
Over the holidays there are specific herbs that you will use for cooking meats and vegetables. Growing your own in small pots is simple, easy and low cost.
5-6 small terra cotta pots, and growing from seed, beginning in about October will net you the herbs that you need by November and December.
You'll be well served by 2-4 inch pots which won't take up too much space and will give you a reasonable harvest of herbs.
The basic herbs that you're going to want to grow over the winter -- particularly for poultry and meats are:
Sage- does wonders for your poultry roasting and for sage dressing/stuffing
Oregano- for spaghetti sauces and other italian dishes
Rosemary- A delicious accompaniment to poultry or roasted beef
Thyme-another easy to grow herb that is remarkable in spaghetti sauces and in roasted meats
Parsley- Easy to grow and fantastic in roast or fried potatoes, breads, garlic bread and pasta.
Dill- a great accompaniment to breads and sauces as well as for fish, particularly salmon.
Each of these are things that you'll use again and again in the kitchen. You'll also love to see the greenery around you in the winter time. It tends to combat that "stuck in the house" feeling.
